Four signal words. One for each level of risk.
A safety message names the hazard, says what can happen, and says how to avoid it. The signal word in front of it tells the reader how serious it is.
- ⚠ DANGERA hazard that will cause death or serious injury if it is not avoided.
- ⚠ WARNINGA hazard that could cause death or serious injury if it is not avoided.
- ⚠ CAUTIONA hazard that could cause minor or moderate injury if it is not avoided.
- NOTICEA risk of damage to the product or to property, with no risk of injury.
These are plain-language summaries. Use the exact wording, colours and layout of the standard your market follows, for example ANSI Z535.6 in the United States, or ISO 3864-2 and IEC/IEEE 82079-1 in Europe.
Write it in the order the reader meets the product.
Readers open a manual at a moment: when the crate arrives, when they install, when something stops. Each chapter answers one of those moments, and safety information covers them all.

- The task title says what is done, to which part.
- Applies to, tools and parts come first, so the reader can prepare.
- The warning sits before the steps it applies to.
- The figure numbers each part, and the steps refer to those numbers.

Instructions for machinery sold in the EU.
In the EU, machinery must come with instructions in a language its users can easily understand, as set by each country. The Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applies from 20 January 2027 and allows the instructions to be supplied in digital form, with a paper copy on request.

They grade a safety message by severity. DANGER: a hazard that will cause death or serious injury. WARNING: one that could. CAUTION: one that could cause minor or moderate injury. NOTICE: a risk of damage to property only, with no risk of injury.
Can a user manual be digital instead of paper?
It depends on the market and the product. In the EU, the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, which applies from 20 January 2027, allows machinery instructions in digital form, with a paper copy free of charge on request at the time of purchase.
