Quick answer

SOLIDWORKS Composer makes the pictures: it reuses 3D CAD data to create illustrations, photorealistic images, animations and interactive 3D content that stay associated with the design. TwinWorks makes the instructions: AI drafts the procedure from the PDF manuals you already have, authors link each step to the imported model, experts approve it, and operators follow it in the browser and, with reporting on, send an execution report when they finish. Choose Composer when graphics from native SOLIDWORKS data are the deliverable. Choose TwinWorks when the deliverable is a reviewed work instruction or manual that must stay current as the product changes.

What each product is

Dassault Systèmes positions SOLIDWORKS Composer for assembly instructions, manuals and other technical communication built from 3D CAD data. Its own description: Composer uses existing 3D design data to create and update graphical assets that are "fully associated with the 3D design".

As of 25 October 2026, the SOLIDWORKS product page lists vector graphics (SVG, EPS, SVGZ, CGM), AVI video and interactive 3D output such as 3D PDF and HTML, and the Composer Help lists JPEG, TIFF, BMP and PNG as raster publish formats. Composer imports SOLIDWORKS parts and assemblies when SOLIDWORKS or SOLIDWORKS Translator is installed on the same computer, and its update command carries geometry, view and metadata changes from a modified CAD file into an existing Composer document. Composer Sync automates the conversion and update of Composer files from SOLIDWORKS data. The free Composer Player views the result; Player Pro is a separately licensed edition. See the official sources used for this review.

TwinWorks is AI-assisted technical-documentation and 3D work-instruction software for manufacturers. Where Composer starts from the model and produces graphics, TwinWorks starts from the task: AI drafts procedure text from your reference PDFs, you import the model (GLB, self-contained GLTF, FBX, OBJ, USDZ, or STEP/STP in beta), and authors create or review each step's part actions and views. When a part, tool or source changes, TwinWorks shows the procedures and manual sections it touches. Your experts review and approve every draft and every update. TwinWorks publishes interactive 3D procedures to the browser and technical documents to the web and PDF, and, with reporting on, collects the execution reports operators send from the floor.

Factual workflow comparison

The table compares how each product handles the same documentation workflows; it is not a feature score. The competitor column summarizes Dassault Systèmes' own pages as checked on 25 October 2026. Editions and add-ons vary, so confirm the details with each vendor.

Workflow TwinWorks (our product) SOLIDWORKS Composer (per solidworks.com and 3ds.com, checked 25 Oct 2026) Evidence
Primary workflow Drafts, reviews and publishes work instructions and technical documents, then runs the procedures with execution records, in one product. Creates 2D and 3D graphical content from 3D CAD data for assembly instructions, manuals, illustrations and other technical communication. [1] [2]
Source data Imports GLB, self-contained GLTF, FBX, OBJ and USDZ models; STEP/STP import is in beta. Drafts documents from existing PDF or Word manuals and procedure text from reference PDFs. Native SOLIDWORKS files are not imported. Imports SOLIDWORKS parts and assemblies (with SOLIDWORKS or SOLIDWORKS Translator on the same computer) and other CAD formats listed in the Composer User's Guide. [3] [4]
Content creation AI drafts procedure text from reference PDFs; authors create or review part actions, views and highlights on the imported model. Experts comment on, edit and approve every draft before release. Authors stage views and animations on the model and capture them as illustrations, photorealistic images, videos or interactive content. [1] [2]
Outputs Interactive 3D procedures in a browser viewer, from a link or a product QR code; technical documents on the web and as PDF; descriptive and procedural S1000D data modules. JPG, BMP, TIF and PNG images; SVG, EPS, SVGZ and CGM vector graphics; AVI video; interactive 3D such as 3D PDF and HTML, viewed with Composer Player. [1] [4] [5]
Design changes Shows the footprint of a change: the procedures and document sections linked to a changed part, tool, consumable or source, plus broken or outdated references. Experts review and approve each update; nothing updates on its own. Update applies a modified CAD file to the existing Composer document, matching parts by identifier; Sync automates conversion and update of Composer files. [1] [3]
Frontline use and evidence Records step status, duration, comments, replays, serial and operator fields, ratings and optional photos, and exports execution reports to PDF, DOCX and XLSX. If you need step-level execution records (completion, photos, durations), ask Dassault Systèmes or your reseller how Composer content is delivered and tracked on the floor. [1]

How to evaluate the two products

Use one assembly or service task with its model, the written procedure it comes from today, and one design change. Compare authoring effort, illustration quality, review, how each tool carries the change, and what the operator and the quality team receive.

FAQ

Workflow-specific answers for this comparison.

Is TwinWorks a SOLIDWORKS Composer alternative?

When the goal is 3D work instructions and manuals that people follow, yes. TwinWorks drafts the procedure text from your reference documents, links each step to the imported model, publishes it to the browser and, with reporting on, collects an execution report when the operator sends one. It is not a like-for-like replacement for Composer's graphics output: if the deliverable is vector illustrations, renders or videos generated from native SOLIDWORKS data, Composer remains the stronger tool.

When is SOLIDWORKS Composer the better fit?

Composer is the better fit when native SOLIDWORKS parts and assemblies are the source, and the deliverable is high-quality illustrations, vector graphics, renders, animations or interactive 3D content that update with the design.

When is TwinWorks the better fit?

TwinWorks fits teams whose bottleneck is the words and the upkeep, not the pictures: AI drafts manuals from existing PDF and Word manuals and procedure text from reference PDFs, expert review and approval, a clear view of what each product change touches, procedures run in the browser, and execution records from the floor.

Can TwinWorks open SOLIDWORKS files?

Not natively. Export the part or assembly to STEP, whose import is in beta, and TwinWorks imports the geometry, part names and available assembly structure. GLB, self-contained GLTF, FBX, OBJ and USDZ are also supported. Test a representative assembly first.

What should an evaluation test?

Use one assembly or service task with its model, the written procedure it comes from today, and one design change. Compare authoring effort, illustration quality, review, how each tool carries the change, and what the operator and the quality team receive.
